Becky Laflam ('23) on Her Role as President at WUVA

From the moment she set foot in the recording studio as a first-year, Becky Laflam (Media Studies, English ‘23) was drawn to the productive and creative environment at WUVA. Three years later, Laflam serves as the organization’s president and helps manage the platform by communicating projects and deadlines, training new members, and producing videos. “It’s a fulfilling role because you get to watch members grow and support them in the video-making process,” said Laflam.

Founded in 1947, WUVA is an independent, student-owned and operated digital media platform designed to serve the needs and interests of the UVA and Charlottesville communities. Under Laflam’s leadership, student staff come from a wide range of majors and backgrounds, work in a variety of departments (e.g., news, sports, student life, opinion, and comedy), and are encouraged to stay engaged in the community and pursue stories that interest them. For instance, Laflam got her start on the student life team where she created a dorm tour for prospective students. She is currently producing a video about Foxfield where she had the opportunity to explore the property and interview workers.

WUVA accepts new student staff year-round with no application or due date.
