Nick Grossman ('20) on Writing for Sports Business Journal

A writer for Sports Business Journal, freelance contributor to Nonstop Sports on YouTube, and part-time Master’s student at Georgetown University, Nick Grossman (Media Studies ’20) is no stranger to early mornings and late nights.

Most days start at 6:00 am, with Grossman compiling sports business news from national and local newspapers for inclusion in SBJ’s newsletter. Grossman has also written several feature-length pieces. One of his most recent stories explored how the Black Sports Business Academy, a non-profit organization, enhances the learning experience and career outcomes for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. “It was great to focus on a subject that doesn’t typically get much coverage and spotlight hardworking individuals who are working to inspire and help the next generation,” Grossman shared.

At UVA, Grossman became interested in exploring a career in sports journalism after taking Sports Journalism and Sports Media Production, with Anna Katherine Clay, Media Studies Assistant Professor of Practice. Grossman reflects, “through the tremendous list of guest speakers and hands-on experience, the courses opened my eyes to the vast jobs and opportunities in the sports media industry.” He also interned with the social media team for the Charlottesville Tom Sox, a summer league baseball team. “It was the perfect combination of fun and real-world experience. I got to have fun with the team, but also work on my craft by live-tweeting games, writing recaps, doing commentary on the radio, and post/pre-game Facebook live reports.”

This spring, Grossman is graduating from Georgetown with a Master’s in Sports Industry Management. Looking ahead, he is keeping his options open to what the dynamic field brings: “The sports media landscape is constantly changing, so you never know where it will be a year or two from now.”
