Sena Ozkurt Azimli

Sena Ozkurt-Azimli studies how journalists are integrating AI tools into newsrooms worldwide, focusing on ethnographic observations and interviews. Her research also explores the role of misinformation in health journalism and in the online forums. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, she holds an MA in Media Studies and a BA in English during which she spent a semester at Ghent University through the Erasmus Exchange Program. Before beginning her doctoral studies, she worked for nine years as a content marketing specialist, where she developed extensive experience in social media and public relations.

Sena is a PhD student in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on the Transatlantic region and South East Europe, specifically examining automated journalism in the US, France, Turkey, and North Macedonia. By centering the lived experiences of journalists, her research captures the tension between technological efficiency and the preservation of editorial integrity across different linguistic and political settings.

Her broader research interests include global media policies, misinformation and the impact of algorithmic governance on democratic discourse. Sena is CITI-certified and trained in compliance with ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks relevant to this study.
