Olivia Stowell’s research focuses on the impact of the platform economy on television and new media, especially unscripted and reality content, in terms of industry practices, policy issues, and representational politics. Her doctoral work explored post-2020 U.S. reality TV's formations of race, gender, and labor. She has published her research in Television and New Media, International Journal of Cultural Studies, New Review of Film and Television Studies and Critical Studies in Television. Her teaching interests include television studies, race and gender in the media, media industry studies, and digital media cultures. Stowell received her PhD in Communication & Media from the University of Michigan, and her MA in English from Villanova University.
