Dr. Julide Etem (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in the Media Studies Department at the University of Virginia. Dr. Etem has an international work history in Turkey, Italy, and the United States. Some of her articles were published in the Journal of e-Media Studies, Global Perspectives, Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media, In Media Res, Review of Middle East Studies, and Rivista Luci e Ombre. She also presented at conferences such as Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), Visible Evidence, Middle East Studies Association (MESA), International Studies Association (ISA) and the International Communication Association (ICA). She was the Early Career Representative of the Communication History division at the ICA.

As a producer, Dr. Etem created short documentaries, digital archives, and multimedia platforms to document stories of marginalized communities. She filmed protests against authoritarian government leaders, anti-Islamophobia movements, human rights violations of refugees, and advocated for disability and abortion rights as well as immigration reform. Her short documentaries were screened at film festivals (such as the Virginia Film Festival) and received the attention of media and government agencies (Inside Higher Ed, The Department of Homeland Security, New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s Office for Policy & Strategic Planning, New American Economy).  She also worked for the Black Film Center & Archive, the City Lights Film Series and the In Light Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.

Dr. Etem has an extensive teaching experience and taught courses on media arts, film history, design & production, and race & ethnicity at Emerson College, Indiana University, University of Virginia, and Clark University. She also guest lectured at Boston College, University of Georgia, Bentley University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. As an educator, she has empowered over 2000 students to practice critical and intersectional thinking in their engagement with and production of media.

She holds a Ph.D. from the Media School at Indiana University, Bloomington, and an M.A. and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.
