Congratulations to Professor Aynne Kokas on the release of Trafficking Data.

UVA's Department of Media Studies analyzes media culture, technology, labor, literacy, policy, infrastructure, and inequity. Our goal is to provide students with the tools to evaluate and shape media. With global reach, our faculty and students examine media from a variety of perspectives that include media history, aesthetics and form, audience analysis, media uses, the impact of media on public opinion, and the relations between media and the law.

Media Studies Public Speaker Series with Erich Schwartzel (registration required)

Erich Schwartzel is the author of Red Carpet: Hollywood, China, and the Global Battle for Cultural Supremacy, published in February by Penguin Press. Red Carpet details China's growing influence over the American film industry, and its effort to replicate Hollywood's success with its own cultural exports. Schwartzel reported the book over several years and three continents. He has covered the film industry for The Wall Street Journal since 2013, and previously wrote about energy and the environment for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Wuhan Lockdown and the Limits of Critique with Guobin Yang (registration required)

The UVA East Asia Center and UVA Department of Media Studies will be hosting Guobin Yang, Grace Lee Boggs Professor of Communication and Sociology at the Annenberg School for Communication and Department of Sociology of the University of Pennsylvania, for a special Coughlin lecture, entitled "The Wuhan Lockdown and the Limits of Critique." James Burnett is the founding editor and managing director of The Trace (thetrace.org), an independent, nonprofit media company dedicated to shining a light on America's gun violence crisis. Working alongside a talented team of reporters, editors, engagement specialists, and designers, he directs strategy, hiring, and fundraising for the two-year-old newsroom as they use investigative reporting to achieve social impact.
