UVA's Department of Media Studies analyzes media culture, technology, labor, literacy, policy, infrastructure, and inequity. Our goal is to provide students with the tools to evaluate and shape media. With global reach, our faculty and students examine media from a variety of perspectives that include media history, aesthetics and form, audience analysis, media uses, the impact of media on public opinion, and the relations between media and the law.

Public Media Career Talk with Angilee Shah of Charlottesville Tomorrow

Angilee Shah is a coach for news organizations and journalism change makers around the country who specializes in building teams, budgets, and editorial strategy for people and communities too often left out of media narratives. Shah spent six years as a founding editor of Global Nation, PRI's The World's coverage of immigration in the US.

In Remembrance of the November 2022 Shootings

The College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will hold a space for meditation, speaking, listening and connection in remembrance of the November 2022 shootings on Grounds.

Participants are invited to sit quietly to reflect and commune or to voice their feelings, frustrations, hopes, remembrances, and aspirations. 

The event, open to all members of the University community, will take place in the auditorium of Old Cabell Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10.
